Catlin and Fairley facing lengthy bans.

Byline: Jon Lees

CHRIS CATLIN and Greg Fairley are set to miss a key part of the new Flat turf campaign after becoming the latest riders to face lengthy bans under the tottingup procedure, writes Jon Lees.

At the end of a busy winter in which Catlin has successfully defended his all-weather jockeys' championship with 67 victories and Fairley has ridden 34 winners, the pair were resigned to a punishment Catlin described as "very harsh".

Jamie Spencer Jamie Spencer (born 8 June 1980) is an Irish flat racing jockey who is considered one of the best jockeys currently riding in Britain and Ireland. He has won many of the classic races his first being the 1998 Irish 1,000 Guineas when he partnered Tarascon to victory. , Catlin's rival for the all-weather title, claimed this week he would have ridden more during the winter but did not want to risk collecting further suspensions because of the tottingup rule under which jockeys incur further suspension for reaching 24 days' of bans in a 12-month period.

However, now Catlin - found guilty of careless careless adj., adv. 1) negligent. 2) the opposite of careful. A careless act can result in liability for damages to others.  and Jimmy Quinn having also served bans this winter.

Catlin said: "It is a very harsh rule. You get a suspension and then when tottingup comes into it you get banned again for the same offence. They are the rules, but they do seem very harsh."

He and Fairley are now awaiting confirmation of a date for their hearings in London. Fairley said: "I need to know when I've got to go down to London and see how many days I get.

"I think the same as Jamie. It's not really fair, but I've just got to take it on the chin. I'm quite lucky in that it's the beginning of the season when there is not a lot really happening. It's out of the way now, so hopefully I don't miss too much.

"They were just small bans I've been getting for silly little things, and they just all added up. I think it's better to get this now than in the middle of the season."
