Catholic radio station for the GTA. (News in Brief: Canada).


Toronto -- An application for a full-time, multi-ethnic Catholic radio station to serve the Greater Toronto Area The Greater Toronto Area (widely abbreviated as the GTA) is the most populous metropolitan area in Canada. The GTA is a provincial planning area with a population of 5,555,912 at the 2006 Canadian Census.  is currently before the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC, in French Conseil de la radiodiffusion et des télécommunications canadiennes) was established in 1968 by the Parliament of Canada to replace the Board of Broadcast Governors. . The proposed new station, run by the non-profit corporation Catholic Youth Studio-KSM Inc. (also known as Catholic Radio) would provide programming in eleven languages, in addition to English and French. A week-and-a-half-long series of hearings was held in Toronto in the fall to hear submissions from the Catholic group, as well as from a number of other applicants who are also vying vy·ing

Catholic Youth Studio-KSM Inc. has been broadcasting paid-time Catholic programming in Polish for the past eight years, and in English for the last year-and-a-half. Its current schedule on CIAO AM 530 sees its Polish programs being broadcast every day of the week 8-9 p.m., and its English programs on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays 9-10 p.m.

Father Gil said the new station would be committed to educating youth and providing them with a spiritual outlet by means of music, entertainment, guidance, and ethnic understanding. The programming schedule would include shows devoted to highlighting Christian music Christian music is music that is written to express either personal or a communal belief regarding the Christian life, as well as (in terms of contemporary music) to give a Christian alternative to main stream secular music.  artists from Canada and around the world. He urged Catholics in the Toronto area to pray for the effort, let others know about it, and support it financially.
