It was founded in 1996 as a merger of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and the Faculty of Education in the University of Toronto (which from 1920 to  (OISE). According to deputy director of education Chris Cromien, the board is in the process of "re-establishing a protocol" between OISE and the University of Toronto Research at the University of Toronto has been responsible for the world's first electronic heart pacemaker, artificial larynx, single-lung transplant, nerve transplant, artificial pancreas, chemical laser, G-suit, the first practical electron microscope, the first cloning of T-cells,  for a religious education program. Those teachers who want to teach in Catholic schools still have an opportunity to pick up a religious education course, he told Catholic Insight.

The Catholic character of the option was questionable (see Dana Thompson's article, Jan/Feb 1998).
