Cathedral welcomes life-saving gift.


COVENTRY CATHEDRAL has been blessed with a life-saving defibrillator defibrillator, device that delivers an electrical shock to the heart in order to stop certain forms of rapid heart rhythm disturbances (arrhythmias). The shock changes a fibrillation to an organized rhythm or changes a very rapid and ineffective cardiac rhythm to a .

The miraculous machine is one of 50 being placed around the city as part of the Derek Higgs Start a Heart Appeal.

It was launched in memory of former Coventry City director and businessman Sir Derek Higgs, who died of a heart attack last year.

The City of Coventry Freeman's Guild donated pounds 1,000 to the cathedral to buy the defibrillator and train volunteers to use it.

Martin Haywood, of Coventry Cathedral, said: "We are delighted at the gift of a defibrillator from the Freeman's Guild which will enhance the range of first aid which our team can offer."

The Start a Heart Appeal aims to make Coventry one of the best prepared places to treat heart attack victims.

The guild has also donated pounds 1,000 to buy another defibrillator, taking the appeal well over half way towards its target.
