Caterpillar Inc. Signs Five-Year Contract Renewal With ArborText Inc., Reaffirms Long-Term Commitment to ADEPT Software.

It is a research and educational center, with a large number of government and industrial research and development firms, many in high-technology fields such as , Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 3, 1997--ArborText Inc., the world's leading provider of content creation and management software for enterprise publishing systems, today announced that Caterpillar Inc., the world's number one manufacturer of earth-moving machinery, natural gas engines and industrial gas turbine engines, and a leading supplier of diesel engines, has signed a five-year contract renewal for its use of ArborText's ADEPT-Editor software.

Caterpillar's Service Support Department (SSD See solid state disk. ) uses ADEPT-Editor for the creation and management of all operations and service documentation for the company's entire product line. SSD maintains five million pages of English documentation, and produces 800 new pages every business day. All these pages are routinely translated into as many as 14 languages, making Caterpillar the second largest private publisher in its home state of Illinois.

Jim Reed, publications coordinator at Caterpillar, said, "ArborText's adaptable, standards-based software has helped make our authoring system more productive and more profitable. We consider ADEPT to be a stable, important and long-term component of our IT infrastructure."

Caterpillar originally implemented ADEPT-Editor in November of 1994 as a key component to their newly developed Service Information System (SIS) authoring system. SIS was a major Business Process Reengineering See reengineering.  effort designed to dramatically improve the consistency of Caterpillar's information, streamline the authoring process, and make documentation readily available to its customers and technicians in the most timely manner.

ADEPT-Editor has been rolled out to 400 concurrent online users in Caterpillar's Peoria, Ill. headquarters, and the company plans to extend the authoring system to remote authors, eventually deploying a global authoring system that also targets plants in Asia and Europe.
