Networks today announced that Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs) and Independent Operating Companies (IOCs) have deployed 1,000 of its integrated, broadband access systems -- including the CNX-5 Broadband DSL System and the CN1000 Broadband Loop Carrier.

These systems have enabled carriers such as Pineville Telephone Company to accelerate the delivery of integrated Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) and broadband Digital Subscriber Line See DSL.

(communications, protocol) Digital Subscriber Line - (DSL, or Digital Subscriber Loop, xDSL - see below) A family of digital telecommunications protocols designed to allow high speed data communication over the existing copper telephone lines between end-users and
(DSL) service, at costs approaching POTS-only solutions.

Both the CNX-5 and CN1000 utilize Catena's innovative, core silicon technology to provide POTS and DSL on every line. This allows carriers to software-provision DSL to all of their subscribers -- whether served from the Remote Terminal (RT) or Central Office (CO) -- without requiring costly truck rolls or line-and-station transfers to activate/de-activate service.

"With the CN1000, we can remotely provision DSL to our subscribers without dispatching a technician," said Gary Creech, Plant Manager at Pineville Telephone Company, a municipally-owned carrier that serves about 2,900 customers in Pineville, N.C., near Charlotte. "It also gives us the flexibility to easily migrate our voice services to a packet infrastructure, when the time is right."

Catena's CN1000 Broadband Loop Carrier is a new class of access system ideally suited for greenfield and retrofit applications. It excels in the delivery of fully integrated voice, data and video in today's network, and it provides an elegant evolution platform for softswitch-based, packet voice architectures.

The CN1000 simplifies the access network by integrating the functions of a Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier In telephone communications, a technology that increases the number of channels in the local loop by converting analog signals to digital and multiplexing them back to the end office.  (NGDLC NGDLC Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier ), Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer A Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) allows telephone lines to make faster connections to the Internet. "Carriers can use our integrated broadband access systems to remotely provision and manage POTS and broadband services, without the operational costs typically associated with DSL turn-up and churn," he said. "These systems are unique in that they offer POTS and broadband on every line -- at prices competitive with narrowband systems."
