This project installed tow haulage systems at five locations to allow barge operators to push larger tows, thereby reducing total transportation costs.

Koontz Electric Co. was the subcontractor for all the tow haulage systems on the river.

The new system allows a tow operator to break an excess load into two sections, and tow the first section through the lock without the tugboat tugboat, small, strongly built vessel, used to guide large oceangoing ships into and out of port and to tow barges, dredging and salvage equipment, and disabled vessels. . This will save 2 to 3 hours per lock, or 26 to 39 hours over the entire system. That is a savings of over a day in travel time.

The prime contract value exceeded $6 million, and Koontz Electric's subcontract responsibilities totaled $426,648.
