Catapult Extends Leadership in 3G Testing with Support for cdma2000; Availability of cdma2000 Protocols Makes Catapult the Test Solutions Provider of Choice for 3G.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 9, 2002

Catapult Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: CATT) today announced availability of cdma2000 protocols for its industry-leading DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) An algorithm that is widely used for data compression. Similar to Fast Fourier Transform, DCT converts data (pixels, waveforms, etc.) into sets of frequencies. The first frequencies in the set are the most meaningful; the latter, the least. 2000(TM) Digital Communications Transmitting text, voice and video in binary form. See communications.  Test System. Now shipping, the cdma2000 protocols position Catapult at the forefront of providers of 3G simulation test systems.

With the addition of protocol stacks to test the A, Ater, Aquinter and Aquarter interfaces, Catapult becomes the first company to provide simulation testing solutions for both of the major 3G wireless technologies -- UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) The GSM implementation of the 3G wireless phone system. Part of IMT-2000, UMTS provides service in the 2 GHz band and offers global roaming and personalized features.  (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System

Specifically, the DCT2000 now supports the A9 and A11 signaling protocols, the A8 and A10 GRE (Generic Routing Encapsulation) A tunneling protocol developed by Cisco that allows network layer packets to contain packets from a different protocol. It is widely used to tunnel protocols inside IP packets for virtual private networks (VPNs).  protocols, and the A1, A3 and A7 IOS (1) (Internetwork Operating System) An operating system from Cisco that is the primary control program used in its routers. IOS is widely used and robust system software that supports the common functions of all products under Cisco's CiscoFusion architecture.  protocols.

"The DCT2000 is the test platform of choice for 3G equipment vendors," said Dave Mayfield, COO and president. "For the many companies targeting the 3G marketplace with both cdma2000 and UMTS products, the DCT2000 provides important benefits by supporting both classes of 3G protocols on a single platform. By allowing multiple users to work in parallel and perform different tests simultaneously, the DCT2000 enables telecom companies to get their products to market faster, improve the ROI (Return On Investment) The monetary benefits derived from having spent money on developing or revising a system. In the IT world, there are more ways to compute ROI than Carter has liver pills (and for those of you who never heard of that expression, it means a lot).  on their test systems and to optimize their investment in user training and test script development."

With test capabilities for both cdma2000 and UMTS, Catapult is positioned for growth in an important telecom market. It is estimated that CDMA will achieve a market share of at least 25 percent in the wireless telecommunications arena by 2005. The cdma2000 technology is currently being implemented primarily in North America and Asia for remote wireless connectivity between computers and handheld devices, wireless transmission of streaming video, and other high-bandwidth network applications.

The DCT2000 test system -- which provides the broadest range of protocol test modules in the telecom industry -- can be used for complete product lifecycle testing. During the early stages of development, the DCT2000 can be used to test compliance with industry standards and to emulate network equipment that is prohibitively expensive to purchase for test purposes, or not yet available. Later, the DCT2000 can support load testing to measure how much traffic the equipment can handle and monitor traffic flow between network nodes to identify configurations that deliver optimal performance.

    FORWARD-LOOKING STATEMENTS

Statements in this press release regarding the company's business outlook and growth expectations and involve a number of risks and uncertainties. Actual results may differ materially from those projected in such statements due to various factors, including but not limited to: the rate at which cellular carriers continue the build-out of 3G networks; the effect of delays or cancellations by customers of their orders; the timing of customer orders, shipments and acceptances; and the company's dependence on customer outsourcing of test systems.
