Catamount catamount: see puma.  Software announces today the release of AutoLock 4.0, a security program for Palm Powered(TM) handheld computers A computing device that can be easily held in one hand while the other hand is used to operate it. The Palm devices are a popular example. See Palm, smartphone and palmtop. . Version 4.0 offers three new methods to enter passwords into AutoLock.

Users can now enter their personal identification numbers (PIN) with Graffiti, external keyboard, or the hard buttons on the devices. Version 4.0 also adds a default Info Line of "If found call username The name you use to identify yourself when logging into a computer system or online service. Both a username (user ID) and a password are required. In an Internet e-mail address, the username is the left part before the @ sign. For example, KARENB is the username in karenb@mycompany.  @ 555.555.9512" on the introductory screen of the device.

AutoLock protects a Palm Powered(TM) device's sensitive data from unauthorized users. Unlike the built-in security program available on any Palm OS(R) device, AutoLock is enabled at all times, unless instructed otherwise.

AutoLock cannot be bypassed with the standard "up arrow" reset that disables other security programs. AutoLock offers the following features not found in the built-in password program: 1) it does not rely on Graffiti for input and 2) it offers the user several customization options when AutoLock is the active password screen.

"The needs of our customers have always been priority number one for us at Catamount," said Hardy Macia, president of Catamount Software. "Our recent product upgrades bear out our philosophy. We added some functionality to PocketMoney because our European customers requested it. Now, some of our larger licensees recently requested additional methods of inputting their passwords for AutoLock."

AutoLock is deployed by several banks, hospitals, and other large companies onto all of their employees' Palm OS devices It may never be fully completed or, depending on its its nature, it may be that it can never be completed. However, new and revised entries in the list are always welcome.

AutoLock 4.0 requires Palm OS 3.5 or newer and retails for US$15. It is available at Catamount.com and all leading online merchants of Palm OS software.
