Catalytica subsidiary Advanced Sensor Devices receives new product funding from Gas Research Institute; $1.2 million over three years.MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 3, 1995--Advanced Sensor Devices, a Catalytica company (Nasdaq:CTAL CTAL Confederacion de Trabajadores de America Latina (Confederation of Latin American Workers) CTAL Canadian Tire Acceptance Limited CTAL Computer Technology Application Lab, Inc. CTAL Confidentially Typed Assembly Language ), announced today that Gas Research Institute (GRI GRI Graduate, Realtors Institute GRI Global Reporting Initiative GRI Gas Research Institute GRI Gallaudet Research Institute GRI General Rate Increase GRI Geoscience Research Institute (Loma Linda, CA) ) will provide $1.2 million in funding over the next three years for development of two new emissions monitoring devices based on the company's CEMcat(TM) continuous emissions monitor, which was also developed under GRI funding. The new products are a continuous emissions monitor able to detect lower levels of nitrogen oxides Noun 1. nitrogen oxide - any of several oxides of nitrogen formed by the action of nitric acid on oxidizable materials; present in car exhausts pollutant - waste matter that contaminates the water or air or soil (referred to as NOx) for the industrial process and gas turbine turbine, rotary engine that uses a continuous stream of fluid (gas or liquid) to turn a shaft that can drive machinery. A water, or hydraulic, turbine is used to drive electric generators in hydroelectric power stations. markets and a continuous emissions monitor that can measure volatile organic compounds volatile organic compound Environment Any toxic cabon-based (organic) substance that easily become vapors or gases–eg, solvents–paint thinners, lacquer thinner, degreasers, dry cleaning fluids as well as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide carbon monoxide, chemical compound, CO, a colorless, odorless, tasteless, extremely poisonous gas that is less dense than air under ordinary conditions. It is very slightly soluble in water and burns in air with a characteristic blue flame, producing carbon dioxide; and oxygen. The funding from GRI will support the development and field tests of commercial products. Thomas P. Morjig, President, Advanced Sensor Devices, said, "Our goal is to help industry comply with air pollution regulations cost-effectively. We are very pleased that GRI has committed to fund the development of new continuous emissions monitors that, like our CEMcat monitor, will be designed for minimal maintenance in actual plant environments." The CEMcat, a significant advance in monitoring technology, is a rugged, compact gas monitor with an installed cost of about one-third that of conventional systems. It detects and measures nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and oxygen, enabling industrial sites to economically comply with the emissions monitoring requirements of the Clean Air Act and its 1990 Amendments. Field installations currently include internal combustion engines Internal combustion engine A prime mover, the fuel for which is burned within the engine, as contrasted to a steam engine, for example, in which fuel is burned in a separate furnace. and gas turbines in the natural gas transmission industry, and process heaters and boilers in the chemical industry. Industry analysts estimate the total annual U.S. market for continuous emissions monitors to be approximately $175 to $220 million. The market has grown at about 3% per year since 1980 as a result of complex, existing regulations. These regulations are typically most stringent in major metropolitan areas, which is where most Americans live. Two new programs of the Clean Air Act Amendments are expected to significantly increase the number of continuous emissions monitor installations. GRI, headquartered in Chicago, manages a cooperative research, development and commercialization program for the mutual benefit of the natural gas industry and its customers. Catalytica is developing new manufacturing technologies and products that offer economic and environmental benefits.
