), announced today that they have signed a new agreement with Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo K.K. for the manufacture and marketing of the gas turbine catalytic combustion reactors being jointly developed by the two companies.

The agreement is designed to accelerate the commercialization of the technology in specific market segments utilizing the respective strengths of each company.

Under the terms of the new agreement, which supersedes a 1988 development agreement, Catalytica and Tanaka have allocated commercialization rights along market and geographic lines. Catalytica receives an exclusive license to manufacture and market catalytic combustion reactors on a worldwide basis for large gas turbines (greater than 25 megawatts power output) and for 1- to 3-megawatt Kawasaki turbines used in cogeneration applications. For other small- and medium-sized turbines (less than 25 megawatts), Catalytica receives an exclusive license to work with turbine manufacturers in the Western Hemisphere Western Hemisphere

. Catalytica will assume all current joint contracts in these markets including those with General Electric Co. and the Affiliated Group of Companies, Inc. Catalytica will continue its relationship with Allison Engine Co.

Tanaka receives a reciprocal exclusive license to manufacture and market catalytic combustion reactors for small- and medium-sized turbines in areas outside Catalytica's geographic areas. Tanaka also receives an exclusive license to manufacture and market the technology for use in certain areas of the transportation market. Catalytica and Tanaka will pay each other a royalty on sales for each application. The parties will continue to cooperate in the development of the technology.

Robert L. Garten, President of the Clean Combustion Systems Division at Catalytica, said, "The new agreement with Tanaka leverages the strengths of the two organizations and represents a significant new stage in the commercialization of our catalytic combustor com·bus·tor

For the turbine markets, it allows Catalytica to accelerate its commercialization projects with gas turbine manufacturers and users that are located in the Western Hemisphere, starting with small- and medium-sized turbines used in electric power generation, cogeneration, and gas transmission and processing, followed by application in large utility turbines. For the transportation application, the agreement takes advantage of Tanaka's strength in large-volume manufacturing and their current relationships with that industry."

Catalytica believes the turbine market represents an attractive opportunity for the company. According to according to

A catalytic combustor reacts fuel with oxygen in the air on a catalyst surface to form hot combustion gases that can be used to power a turbine. Unlike normal flame combustion, which produces high levels of NOx emissions, catalytic combustion virtually prevents the formation of this pollutant. NOx is a regulated air pollutant in many localities worldwide.
