Catalytica Awarded Contract With Allison Engine Company to Develop Catalytic Combustion For Next Generation Turbines.MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 1996-- Catalytica Combustion Systems, Inc. (CCSI CCSI Computer & Control Solutions, Inc CCSI Cisco Certified Systems Instructor (training qualification) CCSI Canadian Centre for Swine Improvement CCSI Contemporary Control Systems, Inc CCSI Channel Coding with Side Information ), a subsidiary of Catalytica, Inc. CTAL Confidentially Typed Assembly Language ), announced today that they have been awarded a $3.5 million contract to develop catalytic combustion for the next generation of turbines under development at Allison Engine Company The Allison Engine Company was a U.S. aircraft engine manufacturer which was acquired by Rolls-Royce plc in 1995 to become a subsidiary, Rolls-Royce Corporation. It is best known for the Allison V-1710 V-12 engine, which was the only high-powered U.S. . These turbines are being developed as part of Phase III Noun 1. phase III - a large clinical trial of a treatment or drug that in phase I and phase II has been shown to be efficacious with tolerable side effects; after successful conclusion of these clinical trials it will receive formal approval from the FDA of the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Turbine System (ATS) program. The ATS program is a joint government-industry effort to develop the next generation of advanced gas turbines with the specific goals of significantly reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides Noun 1. nitrogen oxide - any of several oxides of nitrogen formed by the action of nitric acid on oxidizable materials; present in car exhausts pollutant - waste matter that contaminates the water or air or soil , increasing turbine efficiencies and decreasing total cost of power generation. These turbines are expected to have wide application in the markets for power generation and mechanical drives. The Allison ATS contract is for a family of engines in the 4.5- to 11-megawatt range to be developed over the next 5-7 years and is valued overall at $82.5 million. This is a jointly-funded program, with significant contributions coming from the Department of Energy, Allison, and its industry partners. Key component assembly and testing should begin in 1997. Robert L. Garten, CCSI's president, stated, "We are delighted to be such a significant participant in this program. We believe that this is an important recognition of the potential for our technology not only for current turbines but also to be the combustion technology of choice for NOx control of the most advanced turbines being developed." Duane Smith, chief engineer for the ATS combustor com·bus·tor n. A combustion chamber and its igniters, injectors, and other related apparatus in a jet engine or gas turbine. A name generally assigned to the combination of flame holder or stabilizer, igniter, combustion chamber, and development effort at Allison, elaborated, "We have the stated goal of developing a family of turbines with NOx emissions in the single digits. We feel that catalytic combustion offers us an excellent opportunity to achieve that goal and still obtain high engine efficiency targets and low total power costs, which are the other goals of our program. For these reasons catalytic combustion is the technology of choice for our ATS program and we are happy to be working with Catalytica to incorporate this into our turbines." Catalytica Combustion Systems is developing a catalytic combustion system to prevent air pollutants pollutants see environmental pollution. from gas turbines used for gas transmission, cogeneration, and dispersed and utility power generation. The new proprietary system, which will be marketed under the brand name XONON flameless combustion, is designed to eliminate costly and complex emissions cleanup. CCSI has already demonstrated emissions of less than 5 ppm each of NOx, carbon monoxide carbon monoxide, chemical compound, CO, a colorless, odorless, tasteless, extremely poisonous gas that is less dense than air under ordinary conditions. It is very slightly soluble in water and burns in air with a characteristic blue flame, producing carbon dioxide; , and unburned hydrocarbons under operating conditions simulating the anticipated ATS conditions for each program. Catalytica is developing advanced products and manufacturing processes that use the company's proprietary catalytic technologies for economic and environmental benefits. -0- Note to Editors: XONON is a trademark of Catalytica, Inc.
