This reference presents entries on more than 3,100 agents that can cause birth defects birth defects, abnormalities in physical or mental structure or function that are present at birth. They range from minor to seriously deforming or life-threatening. A major defect of some type occurs in approximately 3% of all births. , including chemicals, drugs, physical factors, gene mutations, and viruses. Approximately 800 of the agents are new to the 11th edition; 150 of these are newly listed agents.
