Eventually the session began, but only three drivers got on the track before it was halted.

Castroneves got the pole in part because of the 28 points earned by Australian Will Power for the number three car in the season-opening race in St. Petersburg, Florida St. Petersburg (often shortened to St. Pete) is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The city is known as a vacation destination for North American and European vacationers, as well as a politically important battleground in U.S. Presidential politics. .

"It's a shame, because obviously you want to put on a great show for the fans," Castroneves said. "But no question, it turned out to be the luck of the draw for me."

Briscoe goes into the race with the lead in the drivers' standings with 199 points. Dixon is second on 196 and Franchitti third on 188.
