Castle laundry houses relics saved from land and sea.The life of Lord Armstrong, who so dominated Tyneside in the 19th Century and created the Cragside estate in Northumberland, is celebrated in a museum based in what was the castle laundry. But the building also houses a fascinating collection of pieces from Second World War aircraft, on loan from Derek Walton of Seahouses. These include : * A propellor from a German ME110 or Ju88, netted by fishermen in 1981. * An ME110 main wheel tyre Tyre (tīr), ancient city of Phoenicia, S of Sidon. It is the present-day Sur in Lebanon, a small town on a peninsula jutting into the Mediterranean from the mainland of Syria S of Beirut. which was washed up at Seahouses in 1998 ( probably from an aircraft shot down on August 15, 1940, by Spitfires from RAF Acklington RAF Acklington is an RAF situated in Northumberland, England. in Northumberland. * An engine, snared in fishing nets off Blyth in 1989, from a Heinkel HE111 bomber. * Part of the engine from a Dornier Do127 bomber, shot down in 1943. * A tyre from a Dornier brought down in 1942 off Blyth and found by a fishing boat off the port in 1995. The aircraft parts are relics relics, part of the body of a saint or a thing closely connected with the saint in life. In traditional Christian belief they have had great importance, and miracles have often been associated with them. of warfare 60 years ago a continuation of conflicts which have swirled around the castle for centuries. |
