Castle & Cooke Community Housing, Inc. Breaks Ground on Casa de Esperanza in Camarillo, California.


LOS ANGELES Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  -- Castle & Cooke Community Housing, Inc., which is indirectly owned by David H. Murdock David Howard Murdock (1924-), with his net worth of 4.2 billion US Dollars, is the 204th richest person in the world. A high-school dropout, Murdock was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1943. , announced today that it has broken ground on Casa de Esperanza, a 45-unit transitional housing project for mentally disordered persons it is building in Ventura County on land leased from the County. Casa de Esperanza, or House of Hope, is currently scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2005. Upon completion, Castle & Cooke Community Housing, Inc. anticipates donating the project to the County of Ventura.

David H. Murdock, who is also the owner of Castle & Cooke, Inc. and Dole Food Company Dole Food Company, Inc. is an American-based agricultural multinational corporation headquartered in Westlake Village, California and is the leading grower and packer of such food items as bananas, pineapples (fresh and packaged), grapes, strawberries, and other fresh and frozen , Inc., among other entities, and is a long-time resident of Ventura County, stated, "I was approached by Supervisor Judy Mikels and further encouraged by Supervisor Cathy Long some time ago when governmental funding for housing the disadvantaged was being greatly reduced because of budget constraints. I thought the Casa de Esperanza project was an excellent opportunity to give back to the community in an area where there is great need."

The approximately 22,300 square foot project, located on an approximately 3.77 acre parcel on Lewis Road in Camarillo, California Camarillo is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 57,077 at the 2000 census. A January 1, 2006 California Department of Finance estimate lists the population at 64,034. The Ventura Freeway (U.S. Route 101) is the city's primary thoroughfare. , will contain three 15-unit housing buildings and one community building. Each housing unit will have its own separate kitchen, dining area, living room and laundry facility. The community building will contain recreational rooms, two group rooms, three offices, bathrooms, storage space and a reception area.

Casa de Esperanza is situated between two other mental health facilities, Las Posadas Posadas (pōsä`thäs), city (1991 pop. 211,297), capital of Misiones prov., NE Argentina, a port on the upper Paraná River. Its industries include woodworking and metallurgy.  and Villa Calleguas. Casa de Esperanza will provide much needed housing to additional County Behavioral Health Behavioral health was first used in the 1980's to name the combination of the fields mental health and substance abuse. As an example, an organization serving both mental health and substance abuse clients might refer to its practice as behavioral health or  clients.

Supervisor Judy Mikels commented, "There are hundreds of worthwhile charities to which a concerned individual could donate. The County and the mentally-ill are extremely fortunate that Mr. Murdock is investing his energy, expertise and funds to create hope for the mentally ill."
