Cast Iron.

The AFS A distributed file system for large, widely dispersed Unix and Windows networks from Transarc Corporation, now part of IBM. It is noted for its ease of administration and expandability and stems from Carnegie-Mellon's Andrew File System.

 Cast Iron Div.'s presentations addressed multiple topics from thin wall castings to inclusion defects to material strength.

In their presentation, "Factors Affecting Microshrinkage Formation in Thin-Wall Ductile Iron Ductile iron, also called ductile cast iron or nodular cast iron, is a type of cast iron invented in 1943 by Keith Millis[1]. While most varieties of cast iron are brittle, ductile iron is much more ductile, as the name implies. " (04-012), J.W. Woolley, M. Liliac, D.M. Stefanescu, Univ. of Alabama, R. Ruxanda, Copeland Corp., and C. Heisser, Magma Foundry Technologies, discussed how thin wall ductile iron (DI) castings can have excellent static mechanical properties. However, mold design greatly influences the formation of microshrinkage, and microshrinkage adversely affects DI's mechanical properties.

The authors evaluated the influence of process variables on microshrinkage in thin wall DI castings. Using three different methods to cast test plates, it was found:

* when using a feeding system, thicker adjacent sections can easily feed thinner sections of a casting;

* when not using feeding, microshrinkage increased with plate thickness;

* plates with the cross-pattern casting process experienced no shrinkage.

In another thin wall related paper, "Development of In-Mold/In-Filter Inoculation inoculation, in medicine, introduction of a preparation into the tissues or fluids of the body for the purpose of preventing or curing certain diseases. The preparation is usually a weakened culture of the agent causing the disease, as in vaccination against  for Thin-Wall Cast Iron" (04-092), Y.S. Lerner, Univ. of Northern Iowa, D. Craig and L. Aubrey, Selee Corp., and T. Margaria and R. Siclari, Pechiney Electrometallurgy Electrometallurgy

Also, the inoculated iron showed a significant increase in the formation of Type A graphite.
