Imagine a red light flashing on the base of your telephone, indicating to fellow household or office members that you're in the midst Adv. 1. in the midst - the middle or central part or point; "in the midst of the forest"; "could he walk out in the midst of his piece?"

of an online session or transmitting a fax. Imagine, in their haste to make a call, they nevertheless pick up the receiver. What happens to your online connection or fax transmission? Absolutely nothing, if the phone in question is the new CP-820 from Casio PhoneMate Inc.

Casio PhoneMate's CP-820 is a 900 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  Digital Spread Spectrum (DSS (1) (Digital Signature Standard) A National Security Administration standard for authenticating an electronic message. The technology -- the first to be offered by any telephony hardware manufacturer -- prevents the telephone from interrupting an online session or a fax transmission and safeguards data during file transfers.

Beginning with the CP-820, Modem Monitor will be incorporated in Casio PhoneMate's newest 900 MHz telephone products. The CP-820 will be available for a promotional price of $99 in the third quarter, at specialty retail and consumer electronics outlets nationwide.

A flashing red light on the base of the CP-820 alerts phone users that an online session or fax transmission is in progress. Modem Monitor-equipped phones feature intelligence that distinguishes between voice calls and a data stream. If the handset is picked up and a call is attempted, Modem Monitor constantly scans and protects the modem connection.

The technology is a strategic element of Casio PhoneMate's commitment to provide "Net-friendly" telephone products for the approximately 25 million households with online capabilities.

"The CP-820 with Modem Monitor is an ideal way to step up to 900 MHz DSS, and it's the only phone smart enough to share a line with a modem or fax machine," said Stephen Knuth, president, Casio PhoneMate. "Today, that means an increasing number of homes and small business offices. With millions of people going online, there's nothing more frustrating frus·trate

Along with Modem Monitor, the CP-820 features 900 MHz Rockwell-based DSS technology, providing the longest range, best clarity, highest call security and enhanced battery life. Rockwell's encoding See encode.  of the digital signal ensures the highest level of security while Casio PhoneMate's sophisticated SecureCom voice scrambling technology prevents others from listening to conversations on the cordless CP-820.
