At the same time, Casio PhoneMate announced that it will launch an aggressive series of programs for resellers, interconnect (1) To attach one device to another.

channel and at other select retailers nationwide.

When they reach the market this spring, the Casio PhoneMate system phones will deliver big business performance to small businesses and home offices. The new line of system telephones -- commonly characterized as "KSU-less" -- represent an advanced telephone and messaging solution for a fraction of the cost of expensive, custom-installed, centrally-controlled systems.

"Increasingly, small business and home-based operations are thinking like larger enterprises and acting accordingly," said Stephen Knuth, president, Casio PhoneMate, Inc. "For many of these companies, Job No. 1 is securing an affordable communications infrastructure -- one that can accommodate growth, cost-effectively. And these days, that means looking beyond the local telco. Even more than the computer, the telephony system is the company's nerve center and the gateway to profits. Selecting wisely is crucial, often complex and, more than ever, a thoroughly strategic decision.

"We see a tremendous opportunity for small businesses to grow with system phones that don't require any special hardware or key system," Knuth said. "The SOHO Soho (sōhō`, sə–), district of Westminster, London, England, known for its continental restaurants. Once a fashionable quarter, it became popular among writers and artists in the 19th cent.  segment is exploding, and we're committed to hitting the sweet spot in the market, with a product family that delivers sustainable price/performance advantages. We're offering a robust, network-based system with PBX (Private Branch eXchange) An inhouse telephone switching system that interconnects telephone extensions to each other as well as to the outside telephone network (PSTN).  functionality, a versatile system configuration, plug-and-play interconnectability, and expandability to a full four-lines by 12-stations. We've integrated directed messaging and our Auto-Attendant capability into a responsive solution that fast-track small businesses simply won't find anywhere else."

Casio PhoneMate defines a "system phone" as a telephone capable of station-to-station interaction without using Central Office lines, including intercom and call transfer functions. System phones also offer such advanced operations as voice mail, directed messaging (to an individual voice mailbox A simulated mailbox in the computer that holds e-mail messages. Mailboxes are stored on disk as a file of messages, a database of messages or as an individual file for each message. The standard mailboxes are usually In, Out, Trash and Junk (Spam). ) and Auto-Attendant, the "virtual operator" capability that routes incoming calls automatically to other stations.

Users simply plug into standard phone jacks and rely on existing wiring; data communication occurs through a common line 1. A "KSU-less" system phone doesn't require a centralized cen·tral·ize

At the same time, more than 40 percent of all U.S. small businesses have two or more lines, driven by SOHO market growth and the Internet.

Although research confirms that small businesses are heavy users of phones and multiple lines, penetration of non-KSU hardware is modest, ranging from a shade under 10 percent in businesses of less than 10 employees to roughly 15 percent in businesses of up to 50 workers, IDC/Link reports.
