Casino opponents in 2 cities band together in legal fight.

SALEM - Opponents of a Florence casino joined forces with citizens from the Columbia Gorge town of Cascade Locks on Thursday, jointly announcing their lawsuits to stop Indian gaming centers in their communities.

The Florence group's attorney, Kelly Clark Kelly Clark (born July 26, 1983) is an snowboarder born in Newport, Rhode Island. She has been snowboarding since she was 8 years old, and began competing in 1999. She became a member of the US Snowboard team in 2000, and later won a gold medal in the Winter Olympics. , announced that he filed a motion asking U.S. District Court Judge Ann Aiken Ann L. Aiken (born December 29, 1951) is a United States District Court judge for the District of Oregon.

Aiken was born in Salem, Oregon and graduated from the University of Oregon in 1974, Rutgers University in 1976, and the University of Oregon School of Law in 1979.

It's the latest legal step in a two-year effort by casino opponents to get a court ruling that former Gov. John Kitzhaber John Albert Kitzhaber (born March 5 1947 in Colfax, Washington) is a physician, member of the Democratic Party and former two term Governor of Oregon. He graduated from South Eugene High School in 1965, Dartmouth College in 1969, and then Oregon Health & Science University with a  violated the state's constitutional casino ban by negotiating a compact allowing for a casino with the tribe.

Clark, flanked by citizens from the two communities at a Capitol news conference, said the same legal arguments were raised in a separate lawsuit, also filed Thursday on behalf of casino opponents in Cascade Locks. That suit was filed in Marion County Marion County is the name of seventeen counties in the United States of America, mostly named for General Francis Marion:

  • Marion County, Florida
  • Marion County, Georgia
  • Marion County, Illinois
 Circuit Court.

Gov. Ted Kulongoski recently signed a compact with the Confederated Tribe of the Warm Springs approving a casino in Cascade Locks.

 of Florence, a plaintiff in the case and an organizer of People Against a Casino Town, said she hoped the emergence of a similar anti-casino campaign in the Columbia Gorge would help build momentum for their cause.

"We're very excited to have some company, but it's sad for people in Cascade Locks. What happened to them is making them company for us," she said. "I think it just highlights that it's a statewide issue."

Kevin Neely, spokesman for Attorney General Hardy Myers, said he could not comment on the new Florence legal filing until state lawyers have reviewed it. Regarding the Cascade Locks lawsuit, Neely said: "Clearly we think the governor has acted lawfully, and we'll be defending the governor's signing of the compact."
