, international alliances and debt-financed expansions, Ricardo Martin Bringas, head of Monterrey-based retailer Organizacion Soriana, stands out for not putting stock in any of it.

Martin Bringas has stuck close to the U.S.-Mexican border and expanded only within what cash-flow could handle-no partners, thank you very much. The conservative strategy combined with tight cost controls has paid handsomely-the firm's market value has soared 283% to US$2.1 billion.

Now in the second year of a four-year, $400 million expansion, Martin Bringas is expanding his area of action south from his high-income base in northern Mexico. Whether he will be able to duke it out with the big retailers in central Mexico remains to be seen, but that he must try is inevitable: Competitors Cifra (Wal-Mart) and Comercial Mexicana Comercial Mexicana is a Mexican hypermarket group, which features stores similar to those owned by Wal-Mart in the United States or Carrefour in France.
