Cash keeps coming to honour Sir Bobby; pounds 150,000 is donated to Foundation.

MORE than pounds 150,000 has been donated to a charity set up by Sir Bobby Robson Sir Robert William Robson CBE (born 18 February 1933, in Sacriston, County Durham, England), commonly known as Bobby Robson (IPA: /ˈbɒbi ˈrɒbsən/  in the weeks since the footballing legend's death.

Well-wishers have pledged floods of cash to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, which raises money to help fight cancer.

The huge figure includes pounds 30,000 donated to the charity by fans who visited St James's Park

    . And a further pounds 40,000 was donated via the foundation's donations website in the first five days alone.

    Sir Bobby's widow, Lady Elsie Robson, last night expressed heart-felt thanks for the generous donations.

    She said: "We have been completely overwhelmed by the thousands of donations to the charity and the numerous personal messages of condolence we've received.

    "The family would like to respond to each and every kind message personally but there are simply too many.

    "During this difficult time it has been a comfort to us all knowing Bobby's charity will continue thanks to the wonderful on-going support it is receiving.

    "He would be very proud and grateful to know that this money will help the experts find a cure for this terrible disease and will help future cancer patients and their families.

    "My family and I intend to continue with Bobby's charity work and will ensure every penny is spent wisely."

    The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation focuses on the clinical trials of cancer drugs and treatments, and was a major part of Sir Bobby's life as he fought his final battle with the disease.

    He was immensely proud of its achievements and described it as the legacy he would most like to leave. In February this year, Sir Bobby was joined by England manager Fabio Capello Fabio Capello (born June 18, 1946 in San Canzian d'Isonzo, Gorizia) is an Italian football manager and former professional player who most recently coached Real Madrid.  to launch a new clinical trials unit at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care Newcastle's Freeman Hospital.

    The Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre offers patients from across north east England North-East England is one of the nine official regions of England and comprises the combined area of Northumberland, County Durham, Tyne and Wear and a small part of North Yorkshire. , North Yorkshire and Cumbria access to early trials and potential new treatments.

    Some of the biggest names in football will arrive in the North East to pay their final respects at Sir Bobby's memorial service at Durham Cathedral on Monday. It follows a private, low-key family funeral for Sir Bobby in Durham last month, following his death in July at the age of 76.
