An EBRD spokesman said the bank would contribute to a global fund to finance a safe enclosure at the facility, located in the former Soviet republic of Ukraine.

"There is a predictable shortcoming in the financing so $215 million of the bank's profits will be transferred to this fund," he said. The spokesman added that the sarcophagus, which should be ready by 2012, will cost around $2 billion. In 1986, reactor No4 at Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded, contam-inating large parts of Europe but especially Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.
