Cash boost for healthy kids diets; EDUCATION: pounds 240m to help subsidise school meals.

HEALTH education officials in Birmingham today welcomed a new multi-million pound move to improve school food and fight childhood obesity as "brilliant" news.

Education Secretary Alan Johnson said the new measures were in addition to the pounds 220 million already going to schools and local authorities in the wake of celebrity chef In its strictest sense, a celebrity chef is a someone who has become well-known for his/her cooking. Martin Donovan, head of Birmingham City Council's health education unit, said: "This is very positive and something we obviously welcome.

"Diet plays such an important part in children's lives and it has been getting worse for a long time. This is brilliant news and hopefully Birmingham will get one of the regional training kitchens."

The new measures also include an entitlement An individual's right to receive a value or benefit provided by law.

Mr Johnson said they had already invested heavily to "radically transform" school food.

"But tackling obesity and encouraging a healthy lifestyle is not just about the food that children eat at school. We must also teach them the skills they need to cook so that they continue to eat healthily in later life.

"Our food reforms and extra money will ensure healthy school meals are the norm in every school, every day."
