Casey Martin Casey Martin (born June 2, 1972 in Eugene, Oregon) is an American professional golfer. He still resides in Eugene. He was educated at Stanford University, and was briefly a teammate of Tiger Woods.  is "climbing the walls and anxious to get out and get active," but it will be two months and maybe three before the Eugene golfer is back on the pro tournament circuit.

Martin recently had a one-week hospitalization to treat an infection following surgery on his withered with·ered

on Saturday but is confined to home until next week. He hopes to do some putting and chipping at that time, in addition to attending the Oregon-UCLA men's basketball game, but doesn't anticipate playing tournament golf on the Buy.com Tour until March or April.

"Everything is healing nicely and I'll get back to normal," Martin said. "But there's no timetable for golf. I'll let my body decide that. I'm not up to it yet, but maybe before long. At least it happened at a time when I'm off anyway."

The incident was still one more painful, frustrating setback for Martin, who was born with a degenerative circulatory disorder called Klippel-Trenaunay-Webber Syndrome, and has sought several remedies over the years without success. The infection occurred after Martin had been in Denver for a surgery that he hoped would provide improved blood flow in his leg.

"Pretty soon after the surgery I noticed an area that didn't look quite right," Martin said, "but the doctors said it was just bruising and that it would go away. But it didn't go away, and a week ago last Saturday I woke up ill and decided I should go to the hospital. I had to miss the Oregon-Stanford game, so you know it was pretty bad.  and had to make other incisions because the infection was starting to spread.

"I had quite a few wounds opened up," he said. "But the worst part is that I'd started all this hoping the original treatment would give me some relief and I'd start out the year with something positive. Unfortunately, it backfired pretty hard and my leg is pretty much as it has been."

Martin has struggled on the golf course the last couple of years and failed to qualify for exempt status on the Buy.com Tour this year. At the same time he has won tremendous respect from people who have seen his physical struggles and the poise with which he has handled his adversity plus the scrutiny he has faced on tour.

"I'm fine," Martin said of his spirits. "I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

if I'll be up to it or if my game will be ready in March. But I should be out there by April at the latest."

One positive is that Martin has found Buy.com tournaments receptive to giving him a sponsor's exemption, which will give him opportunities to play early in the year.

Tournaments have more spots for non-exempt players during the summer months, and with earlier opportunities Martin would also have a chance to improve his status with successful performances.
