Case Study Shows Better Outcome for the Patient by Using the FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI.

MELVILLE, N.Y. -- FONAR Corporation (NASDAQ-FONR), The Inventor of MR Scanning(TM), reported a case study based on the use of a FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI 1. (application) MRI - Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
2. MRI - Measurement Requirements and Interface.
by Bennie W. Chiles III, M.D., F.A.C.S., of Westchester Spine and Brain Surgery, PLLC PLLC Professional Limited Liability Company
PLLC Polk Life and Learning Center (Bartow, FL)
PLLC Partners of Limited Liability Corporation
and Upright Imaging of Westchester, P.C.

Dr. Chiles described the patient as a 49-year-old male who had a 20-year history of chronic back pain and a three-year history of right lower extremity radiculopathy. In earlier scans from a recumbent-only MRI, a right paracentral disk herniation herniation /her·ni·a·tion/ (her?ne-a´shun) abnormal protrusion of an organ or other body structure through a defect or natural opening in a covering, membrane, muscle, or bone.  at L5-S1 was seen. Dr. Chiles reported that based on this scan he would have performed a discectomy disc·ec·to·my

on L5-S1 to relieve pressure on the nerve root and an L5-S1 fusion for the back pain. Fusing L4-5 was not a consideration because there was no spinal instability at this segment that was visible on the recumbent recumbent /re·cum·bent/ (re-kum´bent) lying down.

 MRI images.

The dynamic weight-loaded flexion flexion /flex·ion/ (flek´shun) the act of bending or the condition of being bent.

flex·ion

1. The act of bending a joint or limb in the body by the action of flexors.

and extension images of the FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI revealed that the patient also had a significant spinal instability at L4-5. Consequently, Dr. Chiles fused L4-5 during surgery in addition to the discectomy and fusion of L5-S1. The patient's severe right leg pain is now gone and his back pain is much reduced.

The FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI was able to provide the physician with a more complete visualization of the patient's problem than was possible with a recumbent-only MRI. The result was an excellent outcome for the patient.

About FONAR

FONAR(R) was incorporated in 1978, making it the first, oldest and most experienced MRI manufacturer in the industry. FONAR introduced the world's first commercial MRI in 1980, and went public in 1981. Since its inception, FONAR has installed hundreds of MRI scanners worldwide. Their stellar product line includes the FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI (also known as the Stand-Up stand·up or stand-up
adj.
1. Standing erect; upright: a standup collar.

2. Taken, done, or used while standing: a standup supper; a standup bar.
(TM) MRI), the only whole-body MRI that performs Position(TM) imaging (pMRI(TM)) and scans patients in numerous weight-bearing positions, i.e. standing, sitting, in flexion and extension, as well as the conventional lie-down position. The FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI often sees the patient's problem that other scanners cannot because they are lie-down only. With nearly one half million patients scanned, the patient-friendly FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI has a near zero claustrophobic rejection rate by patients. A radiologist said, "FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI - No More Claustrophobia claustrophobia /claus·tro·pho·bia/ (-fo´be-ah) irrational fear of being shut in, of closed places.

 - The Tunnel Is Gone." As another FONAR customer states, "If the patient is claustrophobic in this scanner, they'll be claustrophobic in my parking lot." Approximately 85% of patients are scanned sitting while they watch a 42" flat screen TV. FONAR's latest MRI scanner is the FONAR 360, a room-size recumbent scanner that optimizes openness while facilitating physician access to the patient. FONAR is headquartered on Long Island, New York, and has approximately 500 employees.
