), a worldwide supplier of high-performance, multiservice wide area network (WAN) switches, today reported results for the third quarter ended September 30, 1995.

Revenue for the quarter increased 140 percent, to $36.0 million, from $15.0 million for the same period in 1994. Net income for the quarter totaled $6.8 million, or $0.22 per share, compared with net income of $2.9 million, or $0.10 per share, for the same period in 1994.

For the nine months ended September 30, 1995, revenue increased 197 percent, to $88.6 million, from $29.8 million for the first nine months of 1994. Net income for the nine-month period was $16.3 million, or $0.54 per share, compared with $5.0 million, or $0.19 per share, for the corresponding period of 1994.

During the quarter, Cascade announced that it had formed an alliance with IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. The combination of Cascade's high performance, standards-based wide area networking systems and services and IBM's highly trained service resources will provide Cascade's users with the technology and service required for growing global networks.

Also this quarter, Cascade announced that LDDS See WorldCom.  WorldCom would test Cascade's B-STDX switches for Frame Relay-to-ATM service and network interworking (standard) interworking - Systems or components, possibly from different origins, working together to perform some task. Interworking depends crucially on standards to define the interfaces between the components.  functionality. Frame Relay-to-ATM interworking enables customers to gradually upgrade portions of their networks to ATM, thus avoiding the high costs of a complete changeover to ATM. Cascade was the first WAN switch vendor to comply with both the Frame Relay-to-ATM service and network interworking standards, incorporating the necessary capabilities in its B-STDX multiservice switch (1) A network switch that not only handles data, but adequately supports the real time transmission of voice and video.

Finally, during the quarter Cascade announced the appointment of Dr. Hassan Ahmed to the position of vice president and chief technology officer. Dr. Ahmed, who holds several significant ATM technology patents, is responsible for investigating new developments in technology to help Cascade maintain its leadership in the broadband packet equipment market.
