Carter: We will handle step up; WARWICKSHIRE: Bowler is confident county can meet challenge.Byline: Brian Halford NEIL Carter Neil Carter refers to several people:
The county season opened today with the Bears starting their programme with a four-day visit to title hopefuls Somerset at Taunton. It is a tough re-entry for Warwickshire to the top- flight from which they were relegated 19 months ago. And ahead over the next five months lie plenty of tough tests, certainly bigger challenges than they faced last season on the way to the Second Division title. But Carter reckons the Bears are well-equipped to handle life back in the First Division and prove that the 2007 season, which saw them demoted in such ignominious ig·no·min·i·ous adj. 1. Marked by shame or disgrace: "It was an ignominious end ... as a desperate mutiny by a handful of soldiers blossomed into full-scale revolt" Angus Deming. fashion, was a oneoff aberration. "We know we have some tough cricket ahead of us but we have players who can handle it," the all-rounder said. "For the vast majority of years Warwickshire have been a First Division side and, apart from the end of 2007 season, our time up there has been pretty good. So we have nothing to fear. "Last year was my first in Division Two as it was for a lot of the guys. We did what was required. It wasn't pretty at times but we won promotion which was what we set out to do. "We have earned the right to be back in the First Division and I think we are wellprepared for it. We have had just the right sort of pre-season. "The time we had together in South Africa South Africa, Afrikaans Suid-Afrika, officially Republic of South Africa, republic (2005 est. pop. 44,344,000), 471,442 sq mi (1,221,037 sq km), S Africa. was excellent and then we had a week or two back in England but nothing too intense too soon to the start of the season. "A few counties were playing a lot of cricket in the week directly before the season and I'm not sure how that will work out for them." Warwickshire are hoping that Carter begins this season the way he ended last, when he bowled Glamorgan to defeat in sensational sen·sa·tion·al adj. 1. Of or relating to sensation. 2. Arousing or intended to arouse strong curiosity, interest, or reaction, especially by exaggerated or lurid details: style at Edgbaston. On the final morning of the 2008 campaign, Carter and Chris Woakes Chris Woakes (born March 2, 1989) is an English cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler. It was the fourth successive season in which Carter has signed off with at least a 'four-for'. He always finishes with a flourish. In the renowned bowlers' graveyard of Taunton this week, the Bears could do with him starting in style.. CAPTION(S): Neil Carter has no fears. |
