Carroll Touch announces availability of Touch-In-A-Box, integrated touch monitor for financial, retail applications.

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 14, 1995--Carroll Touch, a leader in the design, development and manufacture of touch technology, Tuesday announced the December availability of Touch-In-A-Box, a competitively priced, fully integrated touch monitor ideally suited to point-of-sale and financial transaction applications.

Touch-In-A-Box, the newest member of Carroll Touch's direct input desktop monitor family, features a 10.4-inch screen with tilt stand and cable connections for VGA (Video Graphics Array) The display standard for the PC. All PC display adapters support VGA, and Windows machines boot up in "VGA mode" before switching to higher resolutions.  and RS232 PC ports. This system is the first of a new series of flat panel touch monitors which will offer multiple display options and wall mounting in future versions.

Touch-In-A-Box features an active matrix TFT (Thin Film Transistor) The term typically refers to active matrix screens on laptop computers. Active matrix LCD provides a sharper screen display and broader viewing angle than does passive matrix. See LCD and thin film.

 or scanning infrared sensors.

Guided acoustic wave is the newest and most advanced touch technology available today, incorporating many features found only selectively on other touch technologies. These systems have the thinnest profile of any touch technology. They are sealable for use in harsh conditions, offer three-dimensional touch sensing, and are completely drift-free. Guided wave technology offers z-axis capability, adding a third dimension of touch measurement to traditional, two-dimensional x-y-axis systems.

In multimedia and interactive applications, for example, this enables a single touch target to launch a command and to measure variable levels, such as color intensity and sound volumes.  technology which offers a z-axis requires glass sensors three times thicker than those on guided acoustic wave systems and cannot be sealed against potentially harsh environments.

Carroll Touch pioneered the scanning infrared touch industry when it developed the first commercial applications for this technology in the 1970s. Today, Carroll Touch designs, develops and manufactures scanning infrared touch input systems for computer monitors, terminals and flat panel displays A thin display screen for computer and TV usage. The first flat panels appeared on laptop computers in the mid-1980s, and the LCD technology became the standard. Stand-alone LCD screens became available for desktop computers in the mid-1990s and exceeded sales of CRTs for the first time  and holds more than 10 patents for infrared technology alone.

Scanning infrared technology has several inherent advantages over other touch technologies. It is easy to integrate with existing systems because it is available in a non-intrusive clip-on design which retains manufacturers warranties and FCC (1) (Federal Communications Commission, Washington, DC, www.fcc.gov) The U.S. government agency that regulates interstate and international communications including wire, cable, radio, TV and satellite. The FCC was created under the U.S.  certifications for the displays. Color and clarity of the displays is also very sharp as scanning infrared systems place no layers between the user and the display.

Due to its complete sealability and the inherent ruggedness of the opto-matrix design, infrared technology is ideal for heavy industrial, process control, medical systems and other applications where reliability and resistance to shock and vibration are essential. With their patented programmable amplification and servo-loop circuitry, Carroll Touch infrared touch systems compensate for changing environmental conditions, including fluctuations in ambient Surrounding. For example, ambient temperature and humidity are atmospheric conditions that exist at the moment. See ambient lighting.  light and exposure to particulates, dirt, dust and liquids.

Carroll Touch, an AMP company, was founded in 1973. Carroll Touch pioneered scanning infrared touch technology in the 1970s and today is also the market leader for guided acoustic wave technology applications. Carroll Touch recently has expanded its product line beyond the core business of touchscreens for monitors and flat panel displays to position the company as the one-stop source for the human interface market. Carroll Touch was the first in its industry to offer a comprehensive five-year warranty and the first major touch vendor to achieve ISO (1) See ISO speed.
