The UIFN service is rolling out across Europe during 2000 with the first phase of UIFN available across Germany, Austria and Switzerland as of today. UIFN complements Carrier1's recently announced Virtual Internet Service Provider Internet service provider (ISP)

Company that provides Internet connections and services to individuals and organizations. For a monthly fee, ISPs provide computer users with a connection to their site (see data transmission), as well as a log-in name and password.

) product as well as existing enhanced voice services such as prepaid calling cards in order to provide the simplest possible access to the Carrier1 network - one single 00800 number which works across national boundaries.

UIFN is the next addition to the already available portfolio of access methods to Carrier1's European network that includes carrier selection and pre-selection, regular national freephone, and indirect access. For mobile phone users, UIFN offers one common 00800 number to access the Carrier1 network from any European location. UIFN is a building block for those organizations looking to establish PanEuropean Call Centers and develop an eventual "Web-based" PanEuropean Call Center offering.

"The massive increase in Internet traffic Internet traffic is the flow of data around the Internet. It includes web traffic, which is the amount of that data that is related to the World Wide Web, along with the traffic from other major uses of the Internet, such as electronic mail and peer-to-peer networks.  means there is a vital need for networks with the capacity to handle such volumes. The current ratio of 20% data to 80% voice is steadily but surely being reversed. The combination of Carrier 1's voice and internet infrastructure and the increasingly wide range of access methods that it can offer will be a key factor in Carrier1's portfolio of user-ready-services," says Gene Rizzo, Carrier1's Vice-President of Sales and Marketing. "Universal International Freephone is another of those entry points to the network which will be necessary for any company to take full advantage of the tremendous growth in European telecoms usage."
