Carrier1 "Lights" German Fiber Optic Ring.Business/Technology Editors ZURICH, Switzerland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 20, 2000 Leading Pan European Telecom Network Service Provider Announces Completion and Immediate Operability Operability is the ability to keep a system in a functioning and operating condition. In a computing systems environment with multiple systems this includes the ability of products, systems and business processes to work together to accomplish a common task such as finding and of its German Fiber Optic Network Carrier1 International S.A. Established in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), NASDAQ is an automated quotation system that reports on :CONE), a leading European provider of end-to-end Internet, bandwidth, data center and access solutions, announces today the completion and immediate operability of its proprietary German fiber-optic network or "ring". The Carrier1 German Ring covers 2,370 km and connects 14 German cities, including Hamburg, Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig, Nurnberg, Munich, Stuttgart, Mannheim, Frankfurt, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Essen, Dortmund and Bremen. The implementation of a direct connection from Dortmund and Hanover to Berlin is expected during the autumn. The Carrier1 German Ring is completely integrated into the Carrier1 Pan European Network which connects major European economic centers across countries like the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, and Italy where Carrier1 continues to roll-out metropolitan area networks and develop its data center initiatives. Around 150 million Euro were invested in setting up the Carrier1 German Ring, including the electronic equipment that "lights" the network. This amount is competitive compared to other network build projects due to the capital sharing management agreement with Metromedia Fibre Networks and Viatel that was implemented to complete the German ring. With the sale of nine fiber pairs to StarOne, Tesion and 360 networks as well as its current order backlog, Carrier 1 has already recovered all of its investment in the German network. "The new information economy has begun to have a huge impact on German and European businesses and there will be a huge demand for capacity between European business centers in the near future. The Carrier1 network will enable hundreds of operators to have Internet and voice traffic transmitted efficiently, cost-effectively and with the highest quality. Our network is state-of-the-art and scalable to support demand for Internet capacity and positions Carrier1 at the forefront of European telecom providers," said Neil Craven, Executive Vice President Business Development at Carrier1. The Carrier1 German Ring is a totally new construction that consists of 36 fiber pairs, a total of 72 Corning LEAF (Light Emitting and Amplifying Fibers) fibers, sheathed by Siemens. The fibers are G.655 ITU (International Telecommunication Union, Geneva, Switzerland, www.itu.ch) A telecommunications standards body that is under the auspices of the United Nations. "This state-of-the-art transport platform will enable us to develop and enhance Carrier1's 500+ existing and potential customers as they orient their business models for the broadband economy. With the completion of the Carrier1 German Ring and its incorporation into Carrier1's Pan European network, we have significantly increased our capabilities for providing the necessary connectivity infrastructure for our clients to remain competitive, develop new markets, access a larger customer base, and extract more value out of their core business," said Alex Schmid, Executive Vice President Internet Products & Strategic Development.
