Carrier Access Introduces Robust EMS Software for Enhanced Element Provisioning and Management; New NetworkValet EMS Product is OSS-Capable and CORBA-Compliant.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

BOULDER, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 22, 2001

Carrier Access Corporation (Nasdaq:CACS CACS Center for Advanced Computer Studies
CACS Computer Audit, Control and Security
CACS Carrier Access Corporation (stock symbol)
CACs Criteria Air Contaminants
CACS Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies
CACS Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring
), a leading provider of broadband access equipment to communications service providers, announced today the introduction of its NetworkValet(TM) EMS software product.

NetworkValet is a carrier-based, Java(TM) application that simplifies the management of Carrier Access equipment. The GUI-oriented product enables service providers to remotely configure, provision and monitor Carrier Access network elements, saving significant time and money. It incorporates TL1, SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. , and CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) A software-based interface from the Object Management Group (OMG) that allows software modules (objects) to communicate with each other no matter where they are located on a private network or the global  standard management system interfaces to integrate with both existing and future operational support systems.

"Our carrier customers are very focused on quick, reliable, and cost-effective provisioning -- getting service to the end-user rapidly to start the revenue stream," said Ken Ferris, Carrier Access vice president of terminal products. "NetworkValet embraced this as a top-level goal from day one. It's a robust product with features that are usually only found on much more expensive Network Management Systems, like value-added topology overlays and graphical performance management."

Two key design criteria for NetworkValet were OSS-compatibility and CORBA-compliance, enabling centralized visibility and management to the last device in the network. An Operational Support System (OSS Oss (ôs), city (1994 pop. 62,141), North Brabant prov., S Netherlands; chartered 1399. It is a significant industrial center. Manufactures include meat products, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, electrical equipment, and metalware. ) is the core of communication service providers' networks, overseeing the major business activities from provisioning to billing. Common Object Request Broker Architecture (standard, programming) Common Object Request Broker Architecture - (CORBA) An Object Management Group specification which provides a standard messaging interface between distributed objects.

The original CORBA specification (1.
(CORBA) is the telecom industry standard that allows a variety of software management products to integrate efficiently.

NetworkValet features a customizable topology that service providers use to intuitively and graphically organize their network elements across the nation, by region, state, and city -- right down to the building or subnet (SUBNETwork) A logical division of a local area network, which is created to improve performance and provide security. To enhance performance, subnets limit the number of nodes that compete for available bandwidth.  level. Monitoring features support alarming and reporting for line outages, down links and failed equipment hardware. Initial configuration and subsequent service provisioning can be accomplished remotely from a service provider's Network Operations Center See NOC.

Network Operations Center - (NOC) A location from which the operation of a network or internet is monitored. Additionally, this center usually serves as a clearinghouse for connectivity problems and efforts to resolve those problems.
(NOC (Network Operations Center) A central or regional location for monitoring a large network. Also called a "network management center" (NMC), "service management center" (SMC) or "network control center" (NCC), a NOC may be used to manage a large enterprise network, ) -- a feature that commonly reduces the number of costly truck rolls needed to provision services or troubleshoot problems.

NetworkValet sports a client/server architecture to deliver the network element management functionality required by today's service providers. The NetworkValet server application runs in the background, performing the workhorse tasks of data collection, processing and reporting. The NetworkValet client application allows NOC technicians to centrally perform their monitoring, provisioning and maintenance tasks through an easy-to-learn-and-use GUI (Graphical User Interface) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface. .

NetworkValet is available now for Windows(R) NT, Windows 2000, Windows 98 or Solaris(TM) operating systems and is designed for installation on PC workstations. The product supports the Adit adit (ăd`ĭt), in mining, underground passage excavated nearly horizontally, with one end open to the earth's surface, usually used to service a mine. The adit end is the furthermost end from the surface, i.e., the location where miners work. (TM) 600 (releases 1.4.1 and 1.5), Access Navigator(TM) (releases 1.61 and 1.62), Access Bank(R) II, and Wide Bank(R) 28 (releases 2.0 and 2.01), with plans to support all future Carrier Access equipment offerings.
