Carphone seal pounds 1bn Best Buy merger; Shops to sell gadgets.


CARPHONE Warehouse unveiled plans yesterday to create their own European consumer electronics empire.

The mobile seller and internet operator are to spin off their 2400-store network into a pounds 1.1billion joint venture with US group Best Buy.

The aim is to open stores selling electronic goods from TVs to PCs throughout the UK and Europe Europe (yr`əp), 6th largest continent, c.4,000,000 sq mi (10,360,000 sq km) including adjacent islands (1992 est. pop. 512,000,000). .

Best Buy - one of America's biggest names in electronics retailing - have agreed to pay pounds 1.1billion to buy a 50 per cent stake in the new firm.

They plan to use the cash from the transaction to further develop their fixed line telecoms business - and reportedly to fund a war chest to snap up struggling rivals.

It is thought that some of the money raised may go towards a potential bid for the UK operations of the broadband firm Tiscali, who have been put up for sale.

Carphone Warehouse confirmed they were looking at Tiscali but said it was "early days".

Under the deal with Best Buy, the Carphone Warehouse and Phone House brands will remain as high street stores.

But the new venture will see larger retail park-sized consumer electronic Best Buy stores launched across the UK and Europe.

The outlets are set to start opening next year, although Carphone Warehouse suggested UK consumers may see the brand sooner.
