Striking carpenters were back on the job Tuesday at the PeaceHealth construction site in Springfield.

The contractor for that project, Pacific Construction Systems, broke from the contractors' association and created an interim agreement temporarily granting the 6 percent raise that the striking carpenters were seeking, said Eric Franklin, spokesman for the Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters in Washington and Oregon Oregon, city, United States

That pushes up to $31.25 the hourly wage of an interior systems carpenter, such as a framer or hanger, Franklin said.

The PeaceHealth contractor is one of 11 in the Oregon and southwest Washington region that have set up temporary contracts to get striking carpenters back on the job. A small crew was working at PeaceHealth on Tuesday, and about 120 carpenters are expected to work at the site today, said Jack MacDonald

The project already had fallen behind its time line because of bad weather in the fall, MacDonald said. The strike "shouldn't affect the overall outcome," he said. "They'll be pretty darn close to their deadline."

But carpenters continue to picket at other sites throughout the state, including the Slocum Center for Orthopedic orthopedic /or·tho·pe·dic/ (-pe´dik) pertaining to the correction of deformities of the musculoskeletal system; pertaining to orthopedics.  & Sports Medicine sports medicine, branch of medicine concerned with physical fitness and with the treatment and prevention of injuries and other disorders related to sports. Council representatives said they rejected the contractors' final offer of a 4.27 percent raise in the first year of the new contract and a 4.35 percent raise in the second year because the raises were well below those that their counterparts in western Washington

had recently negotiated. Those workers are set to receive a 6 percent raise in the first year of their new contract, followed by a 6 percent raise in the second year.

The carpenters council had expected the strike to last only a few days, but it has dragged on into a second week.

"It's gone on longer than we thought, and certainly longer than we want," Franklin said.

Talks are being scheduled for later in the week, he said.
