CAROLYN Summersgill produced an outstanding performance in the second fixture of the North Yorkshire North Yorkshire, county (1991 pop. 698,800), 3,209 sq mi (8,313 sq km), N England. The county comprises the districts of Craven, Hambleton, Harrogate, Richmondshire, Ryedale, Scarborough, Selby, and York.  and South Durham Track and Field League at Darlington's Eastbourne Stadium.

At the Darlington meeting, New Marske's promising Under-20 athlete Chris Smallwood won the male athlete of the match award for his win in the senior men's 100m in 11.3sec.

For good measure, he also won the senior 400m in 53.1.

Eighteen-year-old Matthew Jones, of Middlesbrough and Cleveland, enjoyed a fine victory in the senior men's 3000m where he led throughout to win in a personal best time of 9:26.1 and also successfully held off the late challenge of the very experienced Richmond and Zetland athlete, Jon Orange, 9:27.8.

The Under-17 3000m was won by Darlington's Paul Clifford 9:46.9 and he showed versatility by also winning the Under-17 400m in 53.8.

Middlesbrough (Mandale AC) athletes fared well in the sprints with Claire Turnbull winning the senior ladies 100m in 13.1 from her club colleague Hayley Richardson (13.4) while Hannah Scott recorded a double victory in the Under-17 100m in 14.0 and the Under-17 300m in 45.5.

A further double at U-17 level in the field events was recorded by Middlesbrough and Cleveland's Laura Brookes, who won the long jump with a leap of 4.29m and the javelin with a throw of 23.25m.
