Carolyn Blakely, Ph.D.

University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Dean of Honors College

CAROLYN Blakely, Ph.D., has held every position from professor to chancellor during her 25 years at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

She began her career at UAPB in 1968 as professor of English. She has also been assistant to the chancellor, interim vice chancellor for academic affairs and interim chancellor.

Her six-month role as interim chancellor in 1991 came at a time when UAPB was entwined in a financial morass.

"It was a challenging and interesting experience," Blakely says. "We were really struggling trying to keep things afloat. There were decisions that had to be made that weren't exactly popular."

Blakely says she's always wanted to teach. A native of Magnolia, she graduated from UAPB with a bachelor's degree in English. She received her master's degree in English from Atlanta University and her doctorate from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.

Last year, she helped begin the Honors College, which now has 75 students. She hopes to develop it within four years where the program can graduate its first students.

Blakely served recently as president of the Southern Regional Honors Council, consisting of 70 colleges and universities. She and her husband, Neal, have two adult children.
