DVD-ROM disks look like CD-ROMs but can hold 4.7Gb of data. This is enough to hold full-length digital quality movies. Some are interactive, allowing the viewer to control the storyline of a game or movie.

A DVD-ROM drive is also able to read ordinary CD-ROM disks. 5x or 6x speed are currently the best around. DVD will largely replace CD so it's worth the extra cost.

Now appearing on higher spec computers are CD-R or CD-RW drives. These are CD drives that can both read and write information on a disk. CD-R disks (recordable) can be written to once only but with CD-RW (rewritable) disks this can be done many times.

They are perfect for storing large amounts of information, sound or picture files and for freeing up space on your hard drive.
