The California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  Public Employees' Retirement System today announced the appointment of Carol A. McConnell as Deputy General Counsel. McConnell will serve as manager of the CalPERS Legal Office, supervising the day-to-day activities of 14 attorneys and reporting to General Counsel Peter Mixon.

McConnell joined the CalPERS legal staff in 2000, initially serving as legal advisor to the CalPERS Board Health Benefits Committee and later as legal advisor to the Board's Benefits and Program Administration Committee, a role that will continue in her new capacity.

"Carol McConnell is an outstanding attorney who is an expert in the complexities of employee pension and health benefits," said Mixon. "I am very pleased that CalPERS members and employers will continue to benefit from her expertise following this well-deserved promotion."

Prior to joining CalPERS, McConnell was an Assistant Chief Counsel at the California Department of Personnel Administration. Before joining state service, she was in private practice with the Wilke, Fleury, Hoffelt, Gould & Birney law firm of Sacramento.
