Carol A. (Thomas) (Yurkanin) Powers, 60.STERLING Carol A. (Thomas) (Yurkanin) Powers, 60, of Sterling, crossed over on Sunday, May 17, 2009 after a courageous 13 year battle with breast cancer. She leaves her husband of 29 years, John J. Powers, Jr.; a son, Nikolai A. Yurkanin and a daughter, Rebecca A. Powers, both of Sterling, a sister, Marianne Thomas of Sterling, and nieces and nephews. She was born in Clinton, daughter of Michael and Frances (Nichols) Thomas and has lived in Sterling most of her life. Carol worked for State Mutual, now Hanover Insurance Hanover Insurance (formerly NASDAQ: HINS) based in Worcester, Massachusetts is one of the oldest continuous businesses in the United States, still operating within its original industry. , for 20 years. From 1981-1997 she ran Blacksmith Antiques and Gifts in Sterling. She worked with her husband at the Sterling Auctions from 1987-2009, specializing in toy and doll auctions. Carol was very proud of her Native American Heritage. She was renowned for her beautiful gardens and enjoyed decorating for the holidays, especially Christmas, Halloween and Easter. She loved music and dance and gave tireless support to a number of local musicians. Carol was a member of the First Church in Sterling, the Hiram O. Taylor American Legion American Legion, national association of male and female war veterans, founded (1919) in Paris. Membership is open to veterans of World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Post 189 Ladies Auxiliary, a former Girl Scout leader, loving wife and mother and made friends every place she went. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 21st, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Rd. (Rte. 12), Sterling.
