:BEC) today announced it has appointed Elias Caro to the newly created position of group vice president for the company's Clinical Diagnostics product development centers and strategic marketing activities.

Caro, who currently serves as vice president for Beckman Coulter's Hematology Development Center, has been promoted to oversee development activities for hematology, clinical chemistry and immunodiagnostics products. This includes establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with the scientific community. The new group vice president, who reports to Albert Ziegler, president of the Clinical Diagnostics Division, will also be responsible for the activities of the worldwide strategic marketing team.

"Bringing product development and strategic marketing together under a single individual provides for more internal alignment to meet customer needs for total testing solutions worldwide," said Ziegler. "Elias has both the global knowledge and breadth of experience in the clinical diagnostics industry to quickly help us realize the benefits of this new position and structure."

Caro started his career with what was, at the time, Coulter Corporation in 1985 as general manager in Venezuela. Over the next 12 years, he continued his international management involvement, serving as general manager in Puerto Rico Puerto Rico (pwār`tō rē`kō), island (2005 est. pop. 3,917,000), 3,508 sq mi (9,086 sq km), West Indies, c.1,000 mi (1,610 km) SE of Miami, Fla. , assistant general manager in France, general manager of the Coordination Center in Belgium, and general manager/president in Japan.

In 1997, the year Beckman Instruments, Inc. acquired Coulter, Caro moved to Miami as corporate director of Information Technology, then stepped into the position of vice president-director, Program Management and Quality Assurance for the Cellular Analysis Development Center. He was named to his most recent position as vice president, Cellular Analysis Development Center in early 1999.
