Carnival Against Capitalism.
On June 18, demonstrators gathered at the world's financial
centers in a protest organized by People's Global Action. The
events were timed to coincide with the meeting of leading industrial
countries in Cologne Cologne (kəlōn`), Ger. Köln, city (1994 pop. 962,500), North Rhine–Westphalia, W Germany, on the Rhine River. It is a commercial, financial, and industrial center, a rail and road junction, and a river port. , Germany. In London, about 4,000 people targeted
financial institutions throughout the city as part of a Carnival Against
Capitalism The Global Carnival against Capital took place on Friday, June 18, 1999. It was an international day of protest timed to coincide with the 25th G8 Summit in Köln, Germany. The carnival was inspired by the 1980s Stop the City protests and the Global Street Party, which was happened (top left). Activists in Toronto held a Reclaim the Streets Reclaim the Streets (RTS) is a collective with a shared ideal of community ownership of public spaces. Participants characterize the collective as a resistance movement opposed to the dominance of corporate forces in globalisation, and to the car as the dominant mode of protest (top right). In downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or , protesters blocked an
intersection (left). In Lima, Peru, 1,000 people--including these
children (below) carrying signs that read "DEBT OR
LIFE?"--formed a chain of solidarity in front of the German embassy
to demand debt forgiveness for developing countries. For more
