Consolidation will be the thrust of Swiss food giant Nestle S.A.'s newly announced United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  subsidiary, Nestle USA Inc., said the local executive who will head the subsidiary.

"The food industry is changing dramatically and in order to be competitive in this industry we will have to get (our U.S. subsidiaries) to work together," said Timm Crull, who will be president and chief executive of Nestle USA when it is formed on Jan. 1. He is currently chairman and chief executive of Glendale-based Carnation Co.

Nestle USA, the headquarters location of which has not yet been decided, will include Carnation and 10 other U.S. subsidiaries of Nestle, with total annual sales in excess of $7 billion.

"It was a different kind of company and the culture was different," Crull said, explaining his return to Carnation. "The culture of Carnation is similar to that of Nestle and that's why the (1985) acquisition has been so successful."
