) division to develop a truly innovative approach to food plant auditing," says Frank Schreurs, (GFTC's Manager of Auditing & Consulting Services). "The computerized system, using hand-held units, will enable GFTC auditors to collect detailed information and upload it to a secure database of audit results for that client. This will enable our clients and their customers not only to see their audit results as a snapshot on a particular occasion, but also to rearrange the data so that they can view results from various perspectives, such as different plants' relative rankings, changes over time, results by product line, and more. The system also improves communications among GFTC, customers and suppliers."

CARMINA's ASSUR-FQP (Food Quality Protection) Technology is on display at the International Food Technology Expo in Chicago July 13 to 16, 2003. Companies involved in the international agriculture-food industry visiting the adjacent booths of Guelph Food Technology Center and Carmina are learning how the new automated HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) protocol can assist in assuring the integrity and reputation of their products. Food manufacturers and private label retailers are insisting that their suppliers and co-packers implement HACCP in their own facilities.

CARMINA's technicians are currently working closely with health care professionals preparing protocols for each of the applications on a prioritized basis.

CARMINA's ASSUR technology applications provide the flexibility for applications ranging from the monitoring of inspections for contaminants such as e-coli in water supplies and the agriculture/food industry to gathering and analyzing data on epidemics or hazards health authorities are tracking -- from SARS and West Nile virus West Nile virus, microorganism and the infection resulting from it, which typically produces no symptoms or a flulike condition. The virus is a flavivirus and is related to a number of viruses that cause encephalitis.  outbreaks to rabies rabies (rā`bēz, ră`–) or hydrophobia (hī'drəfō`bēə), acute viral infection of the central nervous system in dogs, foxes, raccoons, skunks, bats, and other animals, and in  and other diseases.

At a previous conference of over 300 health care professionals from Health Units across Canada held in Edmonton, Alberta in June, 2003 these issues were at the forefront. The ability of the ASSUR system to collect and analyze survey results in real time avoids delays in screening at-risk people thus assisting in controlling the spread of disease. This versatile protocol can be easily adapted to whatever new epidemics may arise in the future.
