Friday night in the Big Apple launched with Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin - duetting with Annie Lennox for a thrilling Chain Of Fools - before Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne and Lou Reed rocked the crowd.

Another highlight was Ray Davies of The Kinks performing his group's classics You Really GotMeand All Day and All Of The Night.

"We're not a jamming band.Wedon't let a lot of people in. But this made perfect sense" said Metallica's James Hetfield as he embraced Ray.

Top of the bill were U2 who opened with the storming Vertigo and Magnificent, bringing the crowd to their feet. The audience couldn't believe it when Springsteen and Patti Smith then walked on to perform Because The Night.
