CARL FINNIGAN Carl Finnigan hails from South Tyneside and is a young English footballer who currently plays for Falkirk having joined from Newcastle United. As a youngster,he had trials at a number of club's, including West Ham United and Bolton Wanderers, whose North-East scouts were Dave  couldn't walk because his feet had swollen up like the Elephant Man's.

But today, after months of agony in which he feared he would lose the chance to play and win a new contract, the Geordie is poised to take his place in Falkirk's frontline against Queen of the South in the Cup.

Finnigan,24, suffered a bad reaction to pills he was ordered to take for treatment of the inner ear virus, labyrinthitis Labyrinthitis Definition

Labyrinthitis is an inflammation of the inner ear that is often a complication of otitis media. It is caused by the spread of bacterial or viral infections from the head or respiratory tract into the inner ear.
.

Last night he said: "The virus lasted four to six weeks but because of a reaction to the medication my ankles swelled up badly to the point where walking was too sore.

"Running and weights was impossible and my body was run down so for two or three months I could do nothing.

"We think it began with a knock on Noun 1. knock on - (rugby) knocking the ball forward while trying to catch it (a foul)

That night I took ill and couldn't do anything.

"After that the reaction was swollen feet and ankles and the doctors didn't know what had happened.

"They reckon it occurs once in a blue moon and I guess I was one of the unlucky ones.

"The virus wasn't too bad - the swelling was the worst thing. My toes were like big,fat chipolatas and were horrible.I could hardly move them and it was scary."

Now Finnigan faces another battle - to fight his way into a struggling Bairns team and earn a new deal.

The former Newcastle striker has been on the bench for the last three games and played the final 15 minutes of the 3-0 defeat by Celtic.

He said:"I am in full training and just need games.I am 20 to 30 matches behind the rest of the lads.

"I am one out of contract in summer so I want to show the gaffer I am fully fit and deserve aplace in the side.

"While I was out the contract was nagging away at the back of my mind. I feared I was going to run out of games before I got fit.

"I now have until the end of the season to get back into the team.

"I never thought about leaving. The club have looked after me and I want to repay them."
