When David Beckham turned down a string of Premiership clubs and teams in Europe to join the Major League Soccer circuit, many of us scoffed at the prospect because the feeling on this side of the pond is that the Americans are still wet behind the ears when it comes to playing football as we know it.

So before Beckham starts counting his bucks and people start drooling over the amount of goals he will no doubt score in the Yankee Doodle Premier League, perhaps the second British import in MLS this week gives you an indicator of the general standard of players over the Atlantic.

So step forward the next Brit to try to crack America ( none other than former Sunderland, Walsall and Shrewsbury star Carl Robinson!
