He broke into the business as a writer and regular performer on Sid Caesar's "Your Show of Shows," which premiered in 1950, and went on to create "The Dick Van Dyke Show," the influential program that along with "I Love Lucy I Love Lucy is a television situation comedy, starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, also featuring Vivian Vance and William Frawley. The series originally ran from October 15, 1951, to May 6, 1957, on CBS (181 episodes, including the "lost" Christmas episode and original " set the standard for television situation comedies. He won five Emmy Awards for the show, which he often wrote and also appeared in as variety show host Alan Brady. "The Dick Van Dyke Show" was recently released on DVD by Image Entertainment in a series of five "complete season" boxed sets, produced by Paul Brownstein.
