It deals with the resources, devices and methods required to optimize the acquisition, storage, retrieval and use of information in health and biomedicine. ."

Editor: How and when did you get into nursing/healthcare informatics?

Dr. Kim: "I got interested in Nursing Informatics during my Doctoral coursework coursework

in 1992-1995. However, there was no program where I could concentrate on Nursing Informatics as my specialty at that time in my country (Korea). So I chose to go to the USA to start my post-doctoral fellowship in the University of Utah The University of Utah (also The U or the U of U or the UU), located in Salt Lake City, is the flagship public research university in the state of Utah, and one of 10 institutions that make up the Utah System of Higher Education. , which was my first experience of studying abroad. It was a great challenge for me because I had never studied abroad before and I was already past 40 at the time. Also not many people were familiar with the field of Nursing Informatics and Medical Informatics that time, so it was tough to find support and resources to get deeper into the field of Nursing Informatics. I finished the Nursing Informatics coursework in one year completing the curriculum designed to be taken over the course of 2 years. After returning to my country, I was offered a position as a faculty member in the College of Nursing concentrating on Nursing Informatics, because there was practically nobody else who had the qualification to teach the field in the late 1990's."

Editor: What are some highlights of your informatics experience?

Dr. Kim: "I am proud that I was one of the pioneers in Nursing Informatics in Korea, and I am glad that we were very successful in hosting the 9th International Congress on Nursing Informatics titled as "Consumer-centered, Computer-supported Care for Healthy People" in 2006 where I worked as the Secretary General of the organizing committee. I believe it was a great success as over 700 participants came from over 40 countries all over the world, and it was a great chance to meet all the experts in NI. The experiences made me realize more about the value of my international colleagues who are willing to devote all their efforts and were committed to the advancement of NI and the future of our healthcare. From the Post Congress Conference, the experts in Nursing Informatics devoted all their efforts to predict the future of NI and the final result was delivered in a book titled: "Nursing Informatics 2020: Towards Defining Our Own Future". I am proud to have participated in the process as one of the editors."

Other significant experiences include the Summer Institute in Nursing Informatics (SINI) provided by the University of Maryland University of Maryland can refer to:

Especially CARING, this is a wonderful organization and resource for me to get a more in-depth view of what is going on with my American friends and to keep me at the frontline front·line also front line

of the State-of-the-Art Nursing Informatics topics. I am planning to organize professional programs similar to the SINI and WINI in Korea, as my Korean colleagues are eager to find and follow their career path in the Nursing Informatics Specialist such as me.

Editor: What topics could you offer your advice in which your knowledge could help others?

Dr. Kim: "My expertise is in Consumer Health Informatics (CHI) and Patient Safety researches which are very up-and-coming areas in Korean Medical/Nursing Informatics. I conducted several research projects on CHI, and taken on the role of project supervisor of national project which was a part of the National Health Informatics Infrastructure of Korean government. And also I led the Patient Safety research, and published several manuscripts in the international and domestic journals as well. If anybody is interested in the topic and would like to share their results and discuss further about it, I would be glad to hear from them."
