The restructure includes the consolidation of Cargill's UK glucose production at Cerestar Manchester and the shut down of sweeteners production at the Cerestar Tilbury Tilbury (tĭl`bərē), part of the urban district of Thurrock, Essex, E England. Tilbury Fort originated under Henry VIII; it was rebuilt and strengthened in the 17th cent.  facility. As a major part of the restructure, Cargill will invest in a state-of-the-art wheat plant at its Manchester site that will process approximately three-quarters of a million tonnes of wheat per year for sweeteners production.

"The outcome of this restructuring--including the move towards the production of sweeteners from wheat rather than corn, a reduced complexity of operation, and superior economies of scale--will allow Cargill to become one of the most competitive producers of sweeteners," commented Frank van Lierde, president, Cerestar Sweeteners.

Production at the Cerestar Tilbury facility will shut down by the end of December, with capacity partly transferred to Manchester. The production of starch and dextrose dextrose: see glucose.  will transfer from Manchester to other Cargill facilities, enabling Cargill's UK glucose production to be consolidated at the Manchester facility. These changes are needed to reflect market conditions and unfortunately could result in about 95 job losses at Tilbury and head count reductions at Manchester.

Construction work on the new Manchester wheat plant will begin at the end of 2005 and is due to be completed in Q1 2007. Converting the production of sweeteners from corn to wheat will commence in Q1 2007.
