Carey, Mike, et al. Inferno.

CAREY, Mike, et al. Inferno INFERNO - Irradiation of Narrow Frequency Envelopes by Repeated Nutation And Orbiting. (Lucifer Lucifer (l`sĭfər) [Lat.,=light-bearing], in Christian tradition a name for Satan. In the Vulgate, Lucifer served as a translation of the Hebrew epithet meaning "Day Star," a name associated with the presumptuous King of Babylon in the Book of Isaiah., Book 5). DC Comics, Vertigo Comics. 165p. illus. c2002. 1-4012-0210-1. $14.95. SA

Lucifer: Inferno features a duel; a difficult birth (2,000 years of labor qualifies, I think); and a quest for a boat made from dead men's fingernails. The main character is Lucifer Morningstar, aka the Devil, who first appeared in Sandman Sandman - The DoD requirements that led to APSE. and now has his own series. By the end of Sandman, Lucifer had quit Hell, cut off his wings, and gone to Earth to play the piano and hang out with surfers in Australia. Times change: the wings are back, and so is Lucifer's involvement in the politics of Hell.

The meat of Lucifer: Inferno is the duel between the angel Amenadiel and Lucifer. The angel Remial, who now rules Hell, wants Lucifer to lose, so he sends a pair of assassins--a giant centipede centipede, common name for members of a single class, Chilopoda, of the phylum Arthropoda. Centipedes are the most familiar of the myriapodous arthropods, which consist of five groups of arthropods that had a separate origin from other arthropods. Centipedes are widely distributed in temperate and tropical lands, living in the soil or surface litter, and under logs or rocks. The largest species, Scolopendra gigantea, may reach 12 in. and a depressed cherub cherubim, kind of angel. Cherubim were probably thought of in the ancient Middle East as composite creatures like the winged creatures of Assyria. In Jewish tradition, they are described (Ezek. 10) as having four faces and four wings and also as beautiful young men; but late Christian art made plump children of them, as in Raphael's Sistine Madonna. With the seraphim (see seraph) they are said to be in the very presence of God. The color surrounding them is traditionally blue.--to dispatch him before the duel begins. To make matters worse, a vengeful storm god has stolen two feathers from Lucifer's wings, rendering him powerless.

Lucifer: Inferno should appeal to fans of the Sandman series. Be warned: there's lots of bad language and graphic violence. Since this is the fifth book of an ongoing series, readers may have difficulty figuring out what's going on. Keep this in mind when purchasing; you may want to get the whole series. George R.
